The surco rack avoids that by putting a cross bar over the back. I would recommend a more permanent installation as there are foam pads that get compressed in the install and taking them on an off would render those useless and could scratch your top. These clamps tighten and secure your rack very well to existing side rails on my jeep. These come in a variety of different sizes ranging anywhere from 45 inches wide to 65 inches wide and 50 inches long to 100 inches long. The rack came with the cross rails and these clamps slide right on those.
